ATLANTA - The Rev. Al Sharpton says there is a national effort to undermine the minority voting rights fought for by Martin Luther King Jr. and others during the civil rights movement.
Sharpton was in Atlanta this past Thursday -2/23, to raise awareness about pending and existing legislation addressing early voting and government-issued identification as an eligibility requirement to cast a ballot.
The activist and television show host has scheduled a march and rally focused on the issue next month that will start in Selma, Ala., the scene of Bloody Sunday, the seminal event that led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Sharpton says many of the existing and proposed laws are modeled on Georgia’s voter ID law passed in 2006 and approved last year by the Department of Justice.
