The J.P. Hicks Family Mass Communication Scholarship
The J.P. Hicks Family Mass Communication Scholarship was established in 2010 to provide support for students at the University of Liberia who are interested in mass communication, either in print, broadcast or online publications.
Scholarship awards are based on a combination of academic achievement, exceptional talent within the discipline and a commitment to enhance the quality of journalism in Liberia. The scholarship award covers the cost of tuition and fees for a period of up to four semesters at the University of Liberia. It also provides for online, one-on-one mentorship with professional journalists as well an allowance for Internet usage. Students entering their junior and senior years at the university are eligible to apply for the award.
The scholarship was created Jonathan Hicks and his wife, Christy DeBoe Hicks, after Mr. Hicks spent time in the West African country in the fall if 2009. He traveled there a on a grant from the Ford Foundation to do writing and broadcasting about the redevelopment of the country following the 14-year civil war that ended in 2003..
In his youth, Mr. Hicks had lived in Monrovia with his family while his father, John Henry Hicks, a former journalist and former United States diplomat, served at the American embassy in Liberia. John Hicks, who was the first African-American reporter at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, supervised the operation of the United States Information Service’s library in downtown Monrovia and hosted a weekly public affairs program on ELBC Radio in Monrovia. It was during that time that Jonathan Hicks formed a connection with Liberia and its people that would last throughout his life.
While in Liberia in 2009, Mr. Hicks was a guest lecturer in the Mass Communications Department at the University of Liberia. After meeting so many talented and committed students who had few resources, he determined that there was a need to support those students, who would become the country’s next generation of journalists, through scholarships and mentoring opportunities.

Jonathan P. Hicks, Former Reporter for The New York Times, Dies at 58
Jonathan P. Hicks, who covered big business and all levels of New York politics, including the campaigns of three New York City mayors, over 24 years as a reporter for The New York Times, died on Monday at his home in Brooklyn. He was 58.
The cause was pancreatic cancer, his wife, Christy DeBoe Hicks, said.
After leaving The Times in 2009, Mr. Hicks was a research fellow at a public policy institute, a columnist for The New York Amsterdam News and a co-founder of a scholarship for aspiring Liberian journalists.
Mr. Hicks, whose father, John H. Hicks, was the first black reporter at The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, joined The Times in 1985, assigned to the business news staff after stints at The Plain Dealer of Cleveland and The Arizona Daily Star. One of his first front-page articles, about black professionals leaving stable corporate jobs, ran on Nov. 29 that year.
He went on to cover the tire and steel industries as well as a bitter five-month strike by 12,600 employees of Caterpillar Inc., the world’s largest manufacturer of construction equipment. He moved to the metropolitan desk in 1992 to report on Mayor David N. Dinkins’s re-election campaign, an ultimately unsuccessful rematch against Rudolph W. Giuliani, a former United States attorney, writing front-page articles about each candidate’s attempts to woo black voters. Mr. Hicks later covered Mayor Giuliani’s crusade against crime and his re-election campaign.
He later covered City Council and congressional races, outlining how demographic shifts and ethnic rifts had changed the political landscape, and reported on Hillary Rodham Clinton’s 2000 senatorial campaign in New York and the political life of Michael R. Bloomberg, including his polarizing but successful bid for a third term as mayor of New York.
After leaving The Times, Mr. Hicks became a senior fellow at the DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, a part of the City University. He began writing a weekly column for The New York Amsterdam News and in 2011 became a senior correspondent for BET.com, Black Entertainment Television’s website.
Jonathan Pruitt Hicks was born in St. Louis on Dec. 4, 1955, to John and Minnie Hicks. After his newspaper career, his father worked for the United States Information Agency. The family lived in Berlin and Liberia before moving to Washington.
The younger Mr. Hicks attended the University of Missouri and the Maynard Institute’s Summer Program for Minority Journalists.
In 2010 he and his wife created the J. P. Hicks Family Mass Communication Scholarship, which helps finance studies at the University of Liberia for aspiring Liberian journalists.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his parents; a daughter, Lindsay; a sister, Louise Hicks Wilson; and two brothers, Geoffrey and Michael.
Mr. Hicks’s interests extended beyond journalism. He knew the film director Reginald Hudlin, who got him minor parts as a sportscaster in “The Great White Hype” (1996) and as Eartha Kitt’s butler in “Boomerang” (1992).
Correction: November 4, 2014
An earlier version of this obituary referred incorrectly to Rudolph W. Giuliani, whose 1993 campaign against Mayor David N. Dinkins was covered by Mr. Hicks. He was a former United States attorney at the time, not the United States attorney.
A version of this article appears in print on November 5, 2014, on page B16 of the New York edition with the headline: Jonathan Hicks, 58, Reporter; Covered Business and Politics.

The Real Romney Record: Ampad
Ampad: “He destroyed our lives just to provide his life with more money”
Romney and Bain made over $100 million, a 2000% return, from a company that was driven into bankruptcy while workers, shareholders, and communities were devastated.
In 1992, Romney’s Bain Capital bought American Pad and Paper (Ampad) for $5 million. Bain began increasing the company’s debt dramatically in order to pay fees to Bain and finance rapid acquisitions. In three years, Bain had brought the company’s debt from $11 million to $444 million. At the same time, Bain was slashing wages and retirement benefits for workers.
In 1995, Bain shut down an Ampad plant in Marion, Indiana, costing 200 jobs and devastating the community. Just months after shutting the plant, Bain had Ampad take on even more debt in order to pay Bain $60 million. Bain even took millions in fees for itself when it had Ampad take on debt to acquire new companies.
In 1996, Romney’s Bain sold 40% of its shares for $15 a share soon after taking the company public. By 1998, Ampad’s stock was virtually worthless and collapse due to the company’s unsustainable debt seemed imminent.
Numerous workers and managers from Ampad and former Bain executives have contradicted Romney’s statements on his involvement with the company.
Ampad Filed Bankruptcy After Bain Took $100 Million In Debt-Financed Dividends, Management Fees And Stock Sales. According to The Boston Globe, “Creditors forced Ampad into bankruptcy in early 2000, and hundreds of workers lost jobs during Ampad’s decline. Bain Capital and its investors, however, had already taken more than $100 million out of the company, in debt-financed dividends, management fees, and proceeds from selling shares on public stock exchanges.” Read More: Boston Globe, 1/27/08
Ampad’s workers saw their retirement benefits cut.According to Politico, “In 1992, Bain Capital purchased American Pad and Paper, which subsequently laid off 250 workers at an Indiana plant and rehired some after slashing their wages and retirement benefits.” Read More: Politico, 7/14/11
Fellow Bain Executive Claims Romney’s Statements on Ampad are Inaccurate.According to the Los Angeles Times, “When Ampad permanently shut the Marion plant several months later, Romney, then back at Bain Capital, expressed his regrets in a letter to Johnson. Romney wrote that he had tried to end the strike "privately without fanfare. It included communicating my strong personal desire that the strike be settled and that the plant remain open, offering my ideas for a possible settlement, and relaying the sentiments of the workers I met with in Boston." That's not how Wolpow, the former managing director at Bain Capital, remembers Romney's role, however. Wolpow had been installed on Ampad's board of directors as part of the leveraged buyout, and he reported directly to Romney before and after the Senate race. "He was in charge," recalled Wolpow, now co-director of the Audax Group, another private equity group. "He could have ordered me to settle with the union. He didn't order me to do that. He let me make decisions that would maximize the value of the investment. That was the right business decision as CEO ofBain Capital. But let's not pretend it was something else." Read More: Los Angeles Times, 12/16/07
CEO of Ampad Also Contradicts Romney’s Claims.According to the Boston Globe, “Hanson said that though he had had no direct contact with Romney after Bain took over Ampad in 1992, it was clear to him that "any significant direction we received would certainly have been authorized by him." Bain Capital, he said, was interested from the start in a "rollup" of Ampad, a consolidation of its resources that clearly involved the layoffs the workers decried yesterday. And Hanson said he had no doubt Romney approved of that strategy. He added that, once unrest gripped the firm in 1994, during Romney's Senate campaign, "there was a high level interest in not hurting his political aspirations."” Read More: Boston Globe, 10/29/02
The Real Romney Record: GST Steel
GST Steel: a “Profitable Failure” where “Every promise they made was broken.”
Romney and Bain made millions from a steel plant that went bankrupt after Bain dramatically increased the company’s debt. Workers lost their jobs and promised health and retirement benefits. Because Bain underfunded the company’s pension fund, a federal agency was needed for a $44 million bail out.
In 1993, Romney’s Bain Capital purchased a steel company and renamed it GS Technologies. To gain control of the company, Bain put up $8 million and quickly had the company take on new debt in order to distribute dividends back to Bain and cover new expenses – helping Bain earn back part of its initial investment.
In 1995, Romney’s Bain had GS acquire another firm, adding over a hundred million in new debt. By then, Bain had forced the company to hold $378 million in debt, which was ten times the annual income of the company and “the company was not on a sustainable course.”
At the same time, Romney’s firm was ordering changes that undermined safety and productivity at the company and installing people who knew little about the steel industry. A worker remarked, “When Romney and Bain came in, it was painfully obvious that they didn’t have a clue about anything to do with a steel mill.”
From 1997 to 1999, losses at the company increased by 300% and it was clear the company could not survive.
By the time the company legally filed for bankruptcy, Romney and his firm had made at least $9 million in profit. Former company officials said the mill, which had been operating since 1888, could have dealt better with market fluctuations if Bain had not forced the company to take on unsustainable debt. A finance professor remarked that using debt to pay large dividends to Bain left the company less prepared for a downturn.
Because Romney’s firm had forced the company to take on hundreds of millions in debt to pay themselves and finance acquisitions, ultimately leading it towards bankruptcy, “GS said it was shedding the guarantees it had promised its workers in the event of a plant closure - the severance pay, health insurance, life insurance and pension supplements that had been negotiated during the 1997 strike.”
Additionally, “records show that the mill's Bain-backed management was confronted several times about the fund's shortfall, which, in the end, required an infusion of funds from the federal Pension Benefits Guarantee Corp.” A federal government agency had to spend $44 million to bail out the pension plan that had been underfunded by Bain.
Reuters called GS one of Bain’s “profitable failures” and a former worker who saw the demise of the plant firsthand said, “Every promise they made was broken. Every promise. Except the fact that they did make a lot of money off of it. They kept that one.”
Even With the Company Bankrupted, Bain Received A $12 Million Return On Its $8 Million Investment In GST Steel, Along With Over $4.5 Million In Consulting Fees. According to Reuters, “Less than a decade later, the mill was padlocked and some 750 people lost their jobs. Workers were denied the severance pay and health insurance they'd been promised, and their pension benefits were cut by as much as $400 a month. What's more, a federal government insurance agency had to pony up $44 million to bail out the company's underfunded pension plan. Nevertheless, Bain profited on the deal, receiving $12 million on its $8 million initial investment and at least $4.5 million in consulting fees.” Prospectus documents Bain’s total profit exceeded $9.3 million. After Closing The Plant, The Company Went Back On Its Promise To Offer Health Insurance, Severance Pay, And Life Insurance.According to Reuters, “GS Industries declared bankruptcy on February 7, 2001, and said it would shut down the Kansas City plant, eliminating 750 jobs. In a press release, the company said the bankruptcy was triggered in part by ‘the critical need to restructure the company’s liabilities.’ Workers soon found out what that meant. In April, GS said it was shedding the guarantees it had promised its workers in the event of a plant closure - the severance pay, health insurance, life insurance and pension supplements that had been negotiated during the 1997 strike. Workers could buy health insurance through the company’s plan, but the company would no longer share its costs. For many who were struggling with asbestosis or other ailments contracted during their years of work, the cost was prohibitive.” READ MORE: Reuters, 1/6/12
Workers Called New Management Inexperienced, Undermined Capabilities to Compete ‘With Anyone in the World.’According to Boston Globe, “Out-of-work steelworkers in Kansas City, for example, blame Romney and Bain Capital for decisions that led to last year’s bankruptcy of a steel mill that opened its doors in 1888. Bain bought the operation, GST Steel Co., in 1993. Workers said the new owners cleaned house and brought in an inexperienced management team. Dan Misel, who worked at GST Steel for 35 years, said Bain came in ‘like the bully on the block,’ assuming its managers knew how to run the operation better than anyone already in place. ‘They brought in people to manufacture steel who had no idea of how to do it,’ Misel said. ‘It was kind of sad to me. We had the facilities and capabilities of producing with anyone in the world.’” According to Bloomberg, “GS Industries Inc., a steel company in Charlotte, North Carolina, filed for bankruptcy in 2001 after workers said a chief executive hired under Bain made missteps, including installing managers who lacked industry expertise, former employees said.” READ MORE:Boston Globe, 10/24/02 and Bloomberg News, 7/20/11
Employees Who Lost Jobs “Still Hold Romney Responsible.”According to the New York Times, “GS Industries Inc., a steel company in Charlotte, North Carolina, filed for bankruptcy in 2001 after workers said a chief executive hired under Bain made missteps, including installing managers who lacked industry expertise, former employees said. Employees who lost jobs at Bain-controlled companies more than a decade ago say they still hold Romneyresponsible.” Read More: Bloomberg News, 7/20/11
Bain Ordered Changes that Undermined Safety and Actually Decreased Productivity.According to Reuters, “Paperwork proliferated. Cost-cutting efforts backfired. Managers skimped on purchases of everything from earplugs to spare motors and scaled back routine maintenance. Machines began to break down more often, and with parts no longer in stock a replacement could take days to arrive. Labor costs spiked as managers revamped work schedules with little understanding of how the plant actually operated. Linson says he picked up an entire shift of overtime each week because his managers didn't realize that a furnace needed a full eight hours to heat up to operating temperature.” Workers described more dangerous work as management that was not familiar with steel and orderedunsafe practices such as exceeding the weight limit of a crane by 50%. A Risk-Free Beginning: Guaranteed Pay and Cover Stories
Mitt Romney says while campaigning that the successes and failures of individual companies is what gives him “credibility on the economy” and that he took great risk to make businesses succeed. Romney has even said he was sometimes himself worried about getting a pink slip.
But, Romney’s beginning at Bain Capital was risk-free. In a deal that seems unbelievable to most Americans, Romney was given his new job heading Bain Capital with the agreement that if Romney failed, he would get his old job back with any raises he missed. The company would also lie for Romney if necessary, creating a cover story for Romney’s failure. As Romney’s mentor said, “there was no professional or financial risk.”
Romney Claimed He Often Worried About Being Fired. "I know what it's like to worry whether you're gonna get fired," Romney told a rally. "There were a couple of times I wondered whether I was going to get a pink slip.'' He didn'toffer specifics. READ MORE: Boston Globe, 1/8/12
Romney Was Guaranteed Old Job With Raises If He Failed at Bain and Co.According to the Boston Globe, when Romney was offered the job as head of Bain and Co., he hesitated because of the professional risk. According to the Globe, “Romney explained that he didn't want to risk his position, earnings, and reputation on an experiment in investing. The offer was appealing, Romney recalled in a recent interview, but he wasn't going to make such a decision in a "light or flippant manner." So Bain sweetened the offer. He guaranteed that if the experiment failed, Romney would get his old job and salary back, plus any raises handed out during his absence. – Boston Globe,6/26/07 and MSNBC
Bain Agreed to Create False Cover Story for Romney if He Failed. According to the Boston Globe, “Romney had one more concern: the impact on his reputation should he prove unable to do the job. In the end, Bain agreed to craft a cover story if necessary, promising to bring Romney back to the consulting firm and explain Romney's return as a matter of his being more valuable to Bain as a consultant. "So," Bain says, "there was no professional or financialrisk.” – Boston Globe, 6/26/07 and Washington Post’s Plum Line, 1/9/12
Promised Health and Retirement Benefits Terminated While Romney Profited
If a company collapses and the employees have their promised health and retirement benefits cut or eliminated, should the people who oversaw that company’s decline walk away with tens of millions in profits?
In numerous cases where Romney’s firm was in charge, that’s exactly what happened:
In Indiana, an office supply company was driven into bankruptcy because of excessive debt added by Romney’s team. Romney and his firm walked away with over $100 million. Bain began slashing retirement benefits even before the company failed and workers spoke of losing health and retirement benefits while Romney and his firm made a fortune. READ MORE: Boston Globe Graphic; Boston Globe, 1/27/08; Politico, 7/14/11; and Boston Herald, 9/23/94
In Missouri, a steel mill was driven into bankruptcy after Romney’s team had it take on significant new debt. Romney and his firm walked away with a minimum of $8 million in profit. Workers were promised severance benefits but then had them cancelled. Health insurance was terminated with tragic results for families. Pension benefits were slashed. READ MORE: Kansas City Star, 6/12/01 and Reuters, 1/6/12
In Florida, a medical company was driven into bankruptcy after Romney’s Bain had the company take on massive debt partially to finance payments to Bain. Romney and Bain made a staggering minimum of $203 million in profit. Salary and retirement benefits were cut for workers even before the company went bankrupt and Bain exited with a quarter billion in profits. To Avoid Taxes for Clients, Bain and Romney Often Set Up in Offshore Tax Havens
Offshore tax havens are one way that some privileged individuals and organizations avoid the taxes that everyone else has to pay. In fact, every year American taxpayers have to make up for an estimated $100 billion in taxes that are avoided by those stashing money offshore.
According to the Los Angeles Times, “Mitt Romney utilized shell companies in two offshore tax havens to help eligible investors avoid paying U.S. taxes, federal and state records show.”
And recently, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times reported that it appears Romney is personally avoiding taxes by holding assets offshore.
Citizens for Tax Justice said that, “honest taxpayers are the losers” when Romney and Bain avoid taxes overseas.
Wall Street Journal: Romney Campaign Statement That He Received No Tax Benefit from Caymans “May Be Wrong or Misleading.” According to the Wall Street Journal, “Mitt Romney’s campaign has attacked an ABC News report on the candidate’s offshore investments, saying his holdings in the Cayman Islands and elsewhere have no effect on the amount he pays in U.S. taxes. But the campaign’s assertions may be wrong or misleading. Tax experts said some of the offshore holdings are likely intended to help Mr. Romney avoid paying an obscure but hefty tax of as much as 35% on some of those investments, held in a tax-deferred retirement account.” READ MORE: Wall Street Journal, 1/19/12
New York Times: Romney Appears to Have Used Cayman Islands for Tax Avoidance Technique. According to the New York Times, “The technique in question allows nonprofit institutions and large retirement funds to exploit the advantages of shell companies set up in tax havens like the Cayman Islands by investing money with private equity firms like Bain Capital, which Mr. Romney ran. Ordinarily, such private equity investments are frequently subject to something called the unrelated business income tax. But by going offshore, pension funds, universities, foundationsand even large individual retirement accounts can structure those investments to avoid that heavy tax…Tax experts and former Finance Committee staff members say that Mr. Romney’s I.R.A. appears to have used the technique, and that he may have benefited personally.” READ MORE: New York Times, 2/7/12
ABC News: Romney Has Up to $30 Million in Caymans, an Offshore Tax Haven.According to ABC News, “But tax experts tell ABC News there are other reasons Romney may not want the public viewing his returns. As one of the wealthiest candidates to run for president in recent times, Romney has used a variety of techniques to help minimize the taxes on his estimated $250 million fortune. In addition to paying the lower tax rate on his investment income, Romney has as much as $8 million invested in at least 12 funds listed on a Cayman Islands registry. Another investment, which Romney reports as being worth between $5 million and $25 million, shows up on securities records as having been domiciled in the Caymans.” Offshore tax avoidance costs America about $100 billion every yearaccording to Citizens for Tax Justice. READ MORE: ABC News, 1/18/12
Los Angeles Times: “Romney tax returns highlight tax code's breaks for rich” According to the Los Angeles Times, “Romney's tax returns reveal a sophisticated low-tax investment strategy that includes offshore funds and a now-shuttered Swiss bank account, contributing to a fortune that has emerged as a potential liability in his quest for the White House… The documents underscore how Romney, the wealthiest candidate to seek the presidency in recent history, has benefited from a tax code that lets investors pay taxes at a much lower rate than people who earn wages or salaries… Experts said Romney's low rate of taxation puts a focus on a tax code that has contributed to a widening gap between the rich and poor. "The question is whether this is appropriate policy going forward," said Kleinbard, who joined national Democrats on Tuesday in critiquing Romney's returns. "Is this candidate so financially invested in certain tax positions that he cannot divorce himself from decisions that are in the country's best interest?"READ MORE: Los Angeles Times, 1/24/12
According to the Los Angeles Times, “In the Cayman Islands, Romney was listed as a general partner and personally invested in BCIP Associates III Cayman, a private equity fund that is registered at a post office box on Grand Cayman Island and that indirectly buys equity in U.S. companies. The arrangement shields foreign investors from U.S. taxes they would pay for investing in U.S. companies. Romney still retains an investment in the Cayman fund through a trust. Campaign disclosure forms show the investment paid him more than $1 million last year individends, interest and capital gains. In Bermuda, Romney served as president and sole shareholder for four years of Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors Ltd. It funneled money into Bain Capital's Sankaty family of hedge funds, which invest in bonds and other debt issued by corporations, as well as bank loans. Like thousands of similar financial entities, Sankaty maintains no office or staff in Bermuda. Its only presence consists of a nameplate at a lawyer's office in downtown Hamilton, capital of the British island territory. "It's just a mail drop, essentially," said Marc B. Wolpow, who worked with Romney for nine years at Bain Capital and who set up Sankaty Ltd. in October 1997 without ever visiting Bermuda. "There's no one doing any work down there other than lawyers." Got Government Help
Romney Benefited From Government Subsidies and Bailouts He Now Attacks
On the campaign trail, Mitt Romney attacks government programs that, in his words, are involved in “picking winners and losers.” But Romney’s private sector record includes deals and investments that owe part of their success to the exact government subsidies, bailouts and tax breaks that Romney now attacks.
Romney has been the beneficiary of preferential treatment by the government—ranging from a steel mill in Indiana to his consulting company in Boston to a special tax loophole that has personally saved Romney millions.
In Indiana, Romney Touts Success of a Steel Company But “Government support was a key ingredient to getting it off the ground.” According to the Los Angeles Times, “What Romney doesn't mention is that Steel Dynamics also received generous tax breaks and other subsidies provided by the state of Indiana and the residents of DeKalb County, where the company's first mill was built. The story of Bain and Steel Dynamics illustrates how Romney, during his business career, made avid use of public-private partnerships, something that many conservatives consider to be "corporate welfare."” The Cato Institute said the story of the Romney-linked companies is "an example of the government stepping into the marketplace, picking winners and losers, providing profits to business owners and leaving taxpayers stuck with the bill." READ MORE: Los Angeles Times, 1/12/12
In Boston, Romney Helped Negotiate Loan Forgiveness to Help His Consulting Firm. According to the Boston Globe, “Romney basically negotiated about a $10 million reduction in the $38 million the firm owed the failed Bank of New England, which had been taken over by the FDIC, a federal agency funded by insurance premiums paid by banks. The $4 million represented interest the firm did not have to pay as a result of the loan forgiveness, the Globereported.” READ MORE: Boston Globe, 7/15/11
Because Romney’s Firm Underfunded Pensions, GS Steel Pension Plan Required $44 Million Bailout. After the pension plan at Bain-controlled GS Steel was underfunded and the company went bankrupt, the federal agencyfor pension insurance supplied a $44 million bail out. According to Retuers, “records show that the mill's Bain-backed management was confronted several times about the fund's shortfall, which, in the end, required an infusion of funds from the federal Pension Benefits Guarantee Corp… The U.S. Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp, which insures company retirement plans, determined in 2002 that GS had underfunded its pension by $44 million. The federal agency, funded by corporate levies, stepped in to cover the basic pension payments, but not the supplement the union had negotiated as a hedge against the plant's closure. For Joe Soptic, who worked at the plant for 28 years, that meant a loss of $283 per month, about 22 percent of his pension. Others lost up to $400 per month, according to documents supplied by the union.” READ MORE: Reuters, 1/6/12
Romney Personally Benefits From a Special Tax Loophole That Allows His Income to Be Taxed at a Lower Rate.Romney personally saved $2.6 million in just one year on a tax loophole that allows wealthy executives at firms like Romney’s to pay a lower tax rate on their income than many middle class workers. According to the New York Times, “Mr. Romney’s disclosure is sure to reignite complaints that private equity executives — among the nation’s wealthiest individuals — get preferential tax treatment. Private equity executives are taxed at the capital gains rate of 15 percent on most of their earnings, a rate well below the 35 percent tax on ordinary income. Certain hedge fund managers, real estate investors and venture capitalists also earn much of their pay in the form of carried interest. Most of Mr. Romney’s income comes from distributions by Bain Capital, the private equity firm that he left in 1999. A large percentage of his wealth remains invested in Bain’s funds.” Even many wealthy individuals have argued that the loophole, which costs American taxpayers $24.6 billion per decade, should be closed. In Remembrance - Nick Ashford
Nick Ashford was born May 4, 1942, in Fairfield, South Carolina, and was raised in Michigan, where he sang at Willow Run Baptist Church, according to The New York Times. After a brief stint at Eastern Michigan University, he moved to New York City, where he attended the White Rock Baptist Church in Harlem and met Valerie Simpson.
The pair began writing songs together and was signed to Motown as staff writers and producers, beginning what would be a fruitful music career. They resumed their career as a duo with the Warner Bros. album, Gimme Something Real. This was followed by the hit singles, "Don't Cost You Nothin'" (1977), "It Seems To Hang On" (1978), "Is It Still Good to Ya" (1978), "Found a Cure" (1979), "Street Corner
" (1982), and their biggest hit, "Solid
," released in 1984, which has become the duo’s best-known song.
The couple of course dabbled in just about everything else ranging from radio to restaurant ownership and seemed to find success at every turn. In addition to their careers, Ashford & Simpson had a very strong personal relationship. They had married for 38 years and have two children.

The Brooklyn-Based Men's Gospel Group MANIFEST
Releases Debut CD HIGHEST PRAISE August 9, 2011
(New York, New York-August 4, 2011)-With a fresh, energetic presentation of original songs that span a number of musical genres from traditional gospel, to contemporary gospel, to jazz-infused inspirational songs, to holyhip hop, MANIFEST is not your typical men's ensemble. This exciting new group will release its debut CD, Highest Praise, on August 9, 2011.
Most of the songs on the 10-track CD, Highest Praise, were written by members of MANIFEST. While their music spans many genres, it also bends, merges and expands these genres to create a fresh, new sound that is uniquely their own. The music and songs are sotextured and filled with interesting elements that you can listen to them again and again and still discover a chord, a flourish, a syncopation or subtle key change that you had not noticed before. The lyrics are equally compelling, telling stories of revelation, resurrection and redemption; expressing praise and adoration; breathing new life into biblical verses, and bringing the good news of God's power and love to contemporary audiences.
The songs on the CD take the listener on a journey of faith: from trust (the R&B style opener "According to His Purpose"), to love ("Because of Who You Are," a love song with a stunning melody and brilliant harmonies, and the funk-rock style praise song, "Extraordinary"), to spiritual growth ("Who Do You Say I Am?," with its hauntingly rich harmonies, and "What Would You Have Us to Do?," a spoken word piece accompanied by a stirring organ solo), to praise ("Highest Praise," a lively house-music style praise song, and "One God," an exuberant praise song with universal appeal) and to reverence ("Bread of Life," a pensive, melodic song with luxuriant harmonies, and "The Man," an eloquent, commanding ballad). The last song on the CD, "Holy Ride," embodies the musical journey in African American gospel music, from small-town southern churches to urban street corners, with Damon White, the song's creator, describing it as "so old it's new again."
The CD also features world-class musicians who have performed with some of the top artists in jazz, gospel, R&B and hip hop. Gregoire Maret, a GRAMMY® Award-winning, internationally renowned harmonica player, is featured on the track "Holy Ride," along with guitarist Sherrod Barnes, who has played with superstars such as Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston. Other featured musicians include Nathaniel Townsley (drums), Kenneth Whalum III (tenor sax), Keyon Harrold (trumpet), Saunders Sermons (trombone), and Al Carty (bass guitar). Thesemusicians have performed or recorded with music stars such as Maxwell, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Fred Hammond, Israel Houghton, Regina Belle, Mariah Carey, Lalah Hathaway, Mary J. Blige, Beyoncé, Jay-Z,Fantasia, Chaka Khan, Macy Gray, Common, Richard Smallwood, Wynton Marsalis, Erykah Badu, and Jill Scott, among many others.Chelton Grey (bass guitar) and Jermaine Parrish (drums) are bandmembers for BET's Sunday Best.Adi Yeshaya, who has arranged and/or produced for a long list of stars, including Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole and Dionne Warwick, contributed the orchestration for "Because of Who You Are."
With MANIFEST's rich harmonies, diverse musical repertoire, and soul-stirring performances, the group has been quickly gaining fans in the gospel music industry and beyond. JJ Hairston, director of the Stellar Award-nominated and chart-topping group, Youthful Praise, and minister of music at the First Cathedral in Bloomfield, CT, had this to say about the group: "MANIFEST is an amazing group. A bunch of guys who love the Lord, sound great, and their passion for ministry and for God is evident when they sing. Great things are to come from them."
The men of MANIFEST are Le Roy Davis, Josh Devine, Jonathan Hicks, Ian Jones, Derrick Marable, Daryl Patterson, Paul Quick, Colin Rodney, Augustus Sanders, Desmond Smith, Dante Smith-Cain, Andre Waring, Damon White, and Robert Wright.Theyrepresent a range of ages, careers, backgrounds and interests. Some members were born and raised in Brooklyn, while others hail from Missouri, Pennsylvania, Maine, Kansas, Nevada and New Jersey. The group includes a journalist, banker, educator, television and film producer, photographer, nurse, foster care counselor, private investigator, substance abuse counselor and students, among others. Many members of the group have been singing in church choirs or other professional choral groups since they were young children. Many of the group's members began singing together as part of Men Voicing Praise, the men's choral ensemble at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY, which was also led by Hicks. Their interests range from basketball, to slot cars, to landscaping, to acting, to gourmet cooking. What they share is a deep devotion and great enthusiasm for sharing the love of God through song. The brothers of MANIFEST seek to take their ministry not just to churches, but also to hospitals, shelters, prisons, festivals and celebrations.
The Highest Praise CD is distributed by Infinity Music Distribution of Central South Distribution, Inc. The CD will be available in stores and at online outlets, including iTunes.

Tears of a Woman
“Mom, why are you crying?” he asked his mom.
“Because I’m a woman” she told him.
“I don’t understand,” he said.
His mom just hugged him and said, “and you never will.” Later the little boy asked his father, “Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?”
“All women cry for no reason” was all his dad could say.
The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why women cry.
Finally he put in a call to GOD. When GOD got on the phone the man said, “GOD, why do women cry so easily?”
“When I made women she had to be special. I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world; yet, gentle enough to give comfort.
I gave her an inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times comes from her children.
I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complaining.
I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances, even when her child has hurt her very badly. This same sensitivity helps her to make a child’s boo-boo feel better and shares in her teenagers anxieties and fears.
I gave her strength to carry her husband through his faults and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart.
I gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to stand beside him unfaltering.
I gave her a tear to shed, it’s hers exclusively to use whenever it is needed. It’s her only weakness; it’s a tear for mankind.”

You Were in My Dreams…
Written By: Byron Nelson on October 15, 2010 at 12:33 am
WHEN you wake from this dream
you shall see my face
from ocean to land
your heart will race
your 3rd eye will see
your mind will lay still
sub conscious wants to run
but, body no will
i can feel ubiquity
will you sit with me?
this is an inequity
i pray that you never leave
but if you unlock that door
know what waits inside
and it may come before
the morning tide
i walked up on her
and read the epitaph
it said “settled the score
as i lay and laugh”
priceless isn’t it
how a man doth think
the ultimate prize his heart
it is all instinct
7 centers of power’
explained in the 10th tower
all centers of chakra
calming hues of aqua
all to be still
are you awake yet?
i will ask you again
to my needs will you tend?
lets call this “the vortex begins”
naked and concealed
vibrations of the world
shall soon be revealed
by little boys and girls
there she goes again
and now she speaks…
our dialogue goes like this
listen as i teach:
he was a tarantula so I crawled on him.
I lick his pedipalp commanding his center.
He is chocolate spilling on my tongue.
His kisses are thick, full, present.
A mouth of beautiful precision.
I lick like it is the last delicacy, gossamer taste
she waits for a response
she calls out his name
sexy isn’t it
she wants to pamper
he wants it too
but he couldn’t answer…

by Kevin Powell
Might it be, as my mother said to me on this ugly, sinful day,
That the world is on its last go-round?
Hijacked wild birds strip the sky of its innocent morning breath
Steel towers crumple like playing cards on an uneven metal table
Unrehearsed screams we dare not hear leap from windows
Into the open, bottomless palms of God
I cannot stand to watch life reduce
Itself to powdery dust and soot lathering the devil's inflamed mouth
But I am fixated on the television anyhow:
Is this what slavery was like?
Is this what the holocaust was like?
Is this what famine is like?
Is this what war is like?
Is this how you felt, dear mother, when King and the two Kennedys were killed?
I want to stitch up the sky, deny humans the right to fly
Cry until my tears have washed hatred
From the mildewed underarms of history
And I want to say to the firemen
Ah, yes, the firemen:
Your husband, your father, your brother, your uncle, your friend
Thank you for speeding to the end of
Your time and thank you for showing us that
Courage is a soul so unselfish it would
Scale a collapsing building to liberate a stranger
Even as your blood relatives wonder if you are alive-
From the remains of this madness
I detect a heartbeat called life
From the remains of this madness
I smell an aroma called love
From the remains of this madness
I embrace a body called humanity
From the remains of this madness
I construct a dream called hope
From the remains of this madness
I will ride the wings of the deceased
Into the clouds, scribble their names on the sun,
Erect a memorial to the moon, chant the blues
For New York City, then resurrect a world
Where a new-born rose will jut through the broken concrete.

Today is unique! It’s my “Birth” – “Day” At midnight it will end, quietly, suddenly, totally. But the hours between now and then are opportunities with eternal possibilities. Thank you “GOD the Father” for breathing “Life” into me. Let my soul take refuge…beneath the shadow of Your wings: let my heart, sing out loud a joyous noise of praise to “You”….

Mary Wilson The First Lady Of Motown

It was a vision of musical stardom as a Detroit teen that inspired Mary Wilson, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, to found one of the most successful female singing groups in recording history – The Supremes. Since then, Wilson has gone on to be a part of dozens of hit records, has written a best-selling autobiography, performed on stage and screen, lectured and toured the world, and continues to be looked up to as a singer who set the standard for females in the recording industry.
As an original Supreme, Wilson was a much sought-after interview regarding the award-winning film DREAMGIRLS, currently on DVD. After covering the red carpet premiere for “Extra,” she endeared herself to a whole new generation of Hollywood stars and fans alike, including Golden Globe winners Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson, as well as Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg! The success of DREAMGIRLS has also rekindled interest in Wilson’s best-selling autobiography, Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme.
At first, success eluded the girls in the Supremes, who recorded several albums before getting their first hit. In fact, they were dubbed the “No-Hit Supremes” until Motown founder Berry Gordy put them in touch with his top writing and producing team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. Four decades and 40 albums later, what once started as a dream has exceeded beyond Wilson’s wildest imagination. With an unprecedented 12 number-one hits, including five in a row – “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love,” “Stop, In The Name Of Love,” and “Back in My Arms Again” – The Supremes set the precedent for super group success.
Wilson worked hard to keep the dream alive even after Florence and Diana left the group. In 1970, Berry Gordy brought in Jean Terrell to replace Ross, with Cindy Birdsong having replaced Florence Ballard. Together, they formed The New Supremes, racking up three top 10 hits [“Up The Ladder To The Roof”, “Stoned Love”, and “River Deep, Mountain High” (with the Four Tops)].
In 1977, Mary knew it was time for her to pursue her own dream; Motown released Mary’s first solo album, “Mary Wilson,” which yielded the dance hit, “Red Hot,” in 1979. In 1992, Wilson released her first album in thirteen years, “Walk the Line,” which produced the single “One Night With You.” To this day Wilson continues to tour under the moniker of Mary Wilson of The Original Supremes, and has performed for handfuls of celebrities and politicians all over the world, including The Clintons at The White House.
In 1988, The Supremes were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, receiving the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, which Wilson personally accepted. Seven years later, the Hall launched an exhibit of the “Supremes” gowns for the museum’s opening in Cleveland, Ohio called The Supremes Reflections: The Mary Wilson Supreme Legacy Collection. Wilson had been personally archiving the gowns for years before the exhibit, and was the natural
With a successful solo career – and new CD out later this year – an equally successful literary career and her tireless humanitarian efforts, Mary’s future couldn’t look brighter. She is living proof that dreams really do come true!

"FREE TRIP TIP TO EGYPT FOR 1000 STUDENTS & 500 ADULTS
About African Genesis Institute
The African Genesis Corrective History Educational Program, known as African Genesis Institute, is a proactive, 3 semester, educational and cultural program for African American and Latino youth between the ages of 7 and 14. African Genesis Institute is a “school without walls” focused on developing an understanding and awareness of the African experience in America. Over this 27-month period students are exposed to their rich and extraordinary ancient African history through 8 weekend classes and 4 field trips. At the end of the program the students sojourn to Africa where they examine the land of their ancestors and share their culture and lifestyle with African youth. All youth who desire to participate in the program are accepted and the trip to Africa is free to the students, serving as the graduation reward for those who complete the program.
THE HISTORY - Co-Founders
Entertainment attorney Helen McCrary Salahuddin and husband, Philip A. Salahuddin, began taking children to Africa in 1997 after years of producing positive entertainment and cultural events for students such as birthday and graduation parties, talent showcases, Kwanzaa, Juneteenth and Black Music Month events. In 2003 African Genesis Institute introduced its complete academic curriculum created by renowned curriculum specialist Dr. Edward Robinson for students 10 to 14. In 2007 the program expanded to include 7-9 year olds with a curriculum created by Atlanta educator and author Chike Akua.
The mission of the corrective historyprogram is to provide the participating youth with a correct historical perspective of their roots and culture thus enabling them to assume their predestined role as leaders in the 21st century. With recent reports documenting the rise in violence, drug abuse and pregnancy among African-American teen-agers, and statistics showing that African-American males between the ages of 13 and 15 are being identified as the new predators and major perpetrators of crime in America, this program and annual sojourn to the motherland is intended to be a foundational stone in the character building process of our young people. It is our belief of that this unique opportunity for those students to visit the motherland, listen and learn from the elders and dialogue with their African peers will result in a life altering experience and give them a correct perspective of who they are, their true history and their innate ability to succeed against all odds.
The African Genesis Corrective History Institute has testimony from parents, teachers, group leaders and other adults who interact with students who graduate from the program, and from the students themselves, that the curriculum and sojourn has had a profound positive effect on the students. Also, students' self-esteem, self-confidence, academic proficiency and scores on standardized tests have increased, absences from school, lateness and incidences of disruptive behavior have decreased and their respect for their elders has taken a dramatic turn for the better.

Thank You All Who Donated & Voluntered Your Time on 12-6-2010
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU ALL!
First off, I want to thank you all so very much who supported Kevin Powell's 10th annual holiday party/HAITI BENEFIT on Monday night, December 6th. It was a packed house, with approximately 1000 attendees coming through during the course of the evening. jessica Care moore demonstrated why she is one of the greatest poets of our times, and cast members from FELA! gave a classic performance, further highlighting why FELA! is the greatest musical in America today. I must also acknowledge the genius of D-Nice, who kept the party flowing all night with his deejaying skills. Most importantly, however, we filled our large rental truck with tons of supplies and toys for EDEYO, the Haitian school we've been supporting.
EDEYO is continuing their partnership with AmeriJet to transport the donated supplies from the holiday party in their cargo planes, at a total estimated cost of $4000. AmeriJet's cost is approximately less than 50%+ the cost of using UPS, DHL, etc. This assumes 3 to 4 thousand pounds of donated goods at a cost of .98 cents per pound.
Thus far we've raised $2000 of the $4000 needed. WE NEED TO RAISE THE REMAINING $2000 THIS WEEK SO WE CAN SHIP THE GOODS DOWN TO HAITI.
So I am personally asking 200 of you to donate just $10 each (if you can do more, please do so), directly to EDEYO, at www.edeyo.org. This way we can get the supplies and toys directly to the children of EDEYO, as has been our vision all along. We are proud of the fact that there has been full transparency with this mission, given all the supplies and donations that have not reached the people most in need in Haiti.
PLEASE share this note with others, thank you for being you, and, again, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
